What Christmas Light Installation Costs in West Michigan
Almost nobody in this category publishes a number. Here is ours, in the first fifty words.
Quotes start at $800 for lighting install/teardown.
That sentence is the only price we can put in writing without seeing your house. Everything below is an honest account of what moves it — not a table we made up to look authoritative.
A starting point, not a price list.
The floor is the entry point for a seasonal Christmas job — install and teardown. It is not a per-house price, not a rate per foot, and not a quote. It exists on this page so you can decide whether to keep reading before anyone drives to your address.

Eight things, in the order they matter.
Every one of these is something you can look at from your own driveway. Read down the list and you will know, before we do, roughly where your house sits.
- Linear feet of roofline
- The single biggest input, and the one every other number adjusts around. It is also the one you can estimate yourself by walking the front of the house.
- More eave, more line
- One story, two, or three
- A ranch and a two-story with the same footprint are not the same work. Height changes equipment, sequencing, how long a run takes and how long we are on the property.
- Height changes the whole job
- Roof pitch and walkability
- A walkable pitch is a different job from one that has to be worked entirely off a ladder. Some pitches are not worked at all — see what we do not do, on the main Christmas page.
- Steeper costs more
- Peaks, gables and dormers
- Count them and you have most of the labor. A straight eave runs fast; a facade with four gables is four separate measured runs with four sets of terminations.
- Each one is a start and a stop
- Trees and shrubs
- Wrapping is the line item that surprises people. One mature maple can carry more line than a small home's entire roofline, and it takes longer to do well.
- Priced by size, not by count
- Columns, rails and walkways
- Detail work at ground level. Any one of them is a small number. All of them together is often the difference between two quotes on the same house.
- Cheap individually, additive fast
- Warm white, color, or app-controlled
- The look you choose is also a hardware decision. Color-changing and app-controlled systems are a different product line with a different install, not a setting on the same strand.
- Different product, different price
- Access and power
- Whether there is an exterior circuit near the elevation, whether a timer exists, whether a ladder can be set safely on that side of the house at all.
- Where the outlet is matters

You will find sliders on other lighting sites that turn a roof length into a dollar figure. The coefficients behind them are invented, and ours would be too.
There are exactly two numbers we can stand behind: the published floor above, and the quote we write after seeing your house. Publishing a third one that looks precise would make this page more persuasive and less true, and we would rather have the second thing.
What we will not quote over the phone.
Roof pitch. Gutter and fascia condition. Whether there is an exterior circuit anywhere near the elevation you want lit. Whether the second-story peak can be reached safely at all. None of those survive a description, and all four change the job.
So we will talk range on the phone, and we will put a number in writing once we have seen the elevation — in person, or in a photograph you send us. A photo of the front of the house is usually enough to get most of the way there.
How a number gets written down.

You send the house
A photo of the front elevation, the address, and anything you already know you want lit. That is enough to start, and it costs you a text message.

We draw the scope
What we would light, and what we would leave dark. The second half is the part most quotes skip and the part that keeps the number down — not every surface on a house is worth lighting, and saying so is most of the design work.

You get the number in writing
One scope, one figure, before anything is ordered. If the figure does not work, tell us and we will cut scope with you rather than quietly cut corners on the roof.
Doing it yourself, honestly.
We are not going to pretend hanging your own lights is expensive. On a single-story ranch with a straight eave and an outlet on the porch, it often is not, and if that is your house and you enjoy the afternoon, do it.
What people actually buy from us is the second story, the twelve-degree Saturday, the January takedown, and the strand that fails on the north gable in the middle of December. Price the ladder, the clips, the strands you will replace next year, the timer, and the hours — then compare. That is the real comparison, and it goes differently for different houses.
We would rather you make that decision with the floor in front of you than after a site visit. That is the whole reason the number is at the top of this page.
Permanent lighting is priced once.
The floor on this page is seasonal — install and teardown, one winter at a time. Permanent outdoor lighting is a one-time system with its own pricing, so we do not quote the two against each other on a page like this one.

Six questions about the money.
Is $800 the price, or the starting point?
It is the starting point, and we publish it word for word: quotes start at $800 for lighting install/teardown. What your house costs is a number we write down after looking at the elevation, and it moves with roofline length, height, pitch, peaks, trees and detail work.
Can you give me a number over the phone?
We can talk about range on the phone. We will not put a figure in writing until we have seen the house, in person or in photographs, because roof pitch, gutter condition and where the power sits do not survive a verbal description.
Why do trees cost so much to light?
Wrapping is priced by size rather than by count. A mature tree can take more line than a small home's entire roofline, and every foot of it is placed by hand from a ladder. It is usually the single largest optional line item on a quote.
Why does one house cost twice what the same-size house next door costs?
Detail, almost always. Two homes with the same square footage can differ by every gable, dormer, column, wrapped tree and lit walkway between them. Roofline length is the first number we take; the count of starts, stops and corners is usually the one that separates the two quotes.
What is the least expensive way to get a house lit well?
A single warm-white roofline, run properly on a clean elevation. It is the cheapest of the three design directions and frequently the one that reads as the most expensive. If there is a second dollar to spend, we would put it on the peaks before adding more surfaces.
Does permanent lighting cost the same?
No. The $800 floor is for seasonal Christmas work — install and teardown. Permanent outdoor lighting is a one-time system priced on its own terms, so the two numbers are not comparable and we do not present them as if they were.
