Norton Shores is mostly post-war and later. A lot of 1960s ranch, subdivisions built wide instead of tall, and a western edge that runs out of trees before it runs out of houses.
Two things follow from that, and neither is true three miles north in Muskegon. A long horizontal roofline is a design problem before it is an installation problem. And a west-facing lot near the dunes has nothing standing between it and the lake.

A seventy-foot ranch roofline is a horizontal problem
Run one straight, unbroken line across a long low ranch and you get a landing strip. It is bright, it is even, and it is dull, and no amount of extra footage fixes it, because the fault is the geometry. On a ranch the interest has to come from somewhere other than the roof: the entry, the garage bays, the columns, a wrapped tree with real height to it, and a second plane of light closer to the ground. The roofline becomes the frame instead of the whole picture. That is a design decision made before anyone opens a box, and it is the single biggest difference between a Norton Shores install that works and one that does not.

West-facing, and no windbreak
Along the Lake Harbor corridor and the dune edge by P. J. Hoffmaster State Park, the wind arrives with nothing in front of it. That changes the install rather than the design: more clips per foot on the lake elevation, connections routed off the windward side, and more slack than an inland run needs. Mona Lake frontage is its own case again. The back elevation, the one nobody lights, is the side half the neighborhood can see across the water.

Low-profile LED modules seated into the soffit or fascia line. Warm white year-round, color on the dates you care about, run from your phone. Post-war construction is generally friendlier to this than Muskegon's older stock: soffits are consistent, runs are long and straight, and exterior power is usually already close. The long elevation that makes a Christmas display hard is the same thing that makes a permanent line look clean.

Norton Shores has two commercial corridors, Henry Street and Harvey Street, and commercial lighting does not run on the residential schedule. A storefront wants to be lit before its selling season starts, and the work happens outside business hours, which means the install date is set by somebody else's operating hours rather than by the weather.
In practice that pulls commercial installs earlier in the fall than residential ones, and it is the reason a Norton Shores calendar looks different from a Muskegon one. If you own a building on either corridor, the conversation starts earlier than you would think, and it starts with a site walk.

The order we work in, and why.
Two things set the Norton Shores order. Commercial goes first, because a business is lit for its selling season and not for a holiday. And on the residential side, exposed lake elevations go up before the wind settles in, because working a windward roof in December is how installs get rushed.
A wide ranch also takes longer to quote honestly than a photo can support. The measurement happens on site, with a wheel, because a seventy-foot elevation is where guessing shows up in the final number.

Norton Shores questions we actually get.
- Our house is one long roofline. Is it just going to look like a straight line?
- It is, if that is all anyone does with it. A single unbroken run across a wide ranch reads flat from the street. The fix is a second plane of light: garage bays, entry, columns, a wrapped tree, so the roofline frames the house instead of underlining it. You see where the interest is going before anything is scheduled.
- We are on Mona Lake. Does the water side get lit?
- That is a real decision, not a formality. On a waterfront lot the back elevation is the one your neighbors actually see, and it is usually the one nobody lights. It also adds linear feet, so it moves the number. We price it as its own line so you can say yes or no to it on its own.
- The wind out here keeps pulling our lights down. What is different about yours?
- More clips per foot on the exposed elevation, more slack in the run so a freeze-and-thaw cycle pulls on the clip instead of the wire, and connections routed off the windward side. Then mid-season service, because on the dune edge something is going to move.
- Our subdivision has an association. Do you handle that?
- We give you the design and the fixture description in writing so you can put it in front of your association before anything is scheduled. We do not submit on your behalf, and we will not tell you what your association is going to approve.
- Do you light businesses on Henry or Harvey?
